Last week Jessica and I headed out for a 3 day and 2 night camping adventure at Watkins Glen, NY! It is a beautiful scenic state park at the bottom end of one of the NY finger lakes. This was our "practice run" before our big backpacking adventure to the Adirondacks! We had a bunch of equipment to test out.
We set up base at our campsite #82 and enjoyed the only few hours it DIDN'T rain the entire time...
It started raining again in the night and thru the next day, so breakfast was served via electric stove inside the tent!
We cooked delicious meals the whole time, and despite the poor weather we had a great time!!
Our second day there we put our rain gear on and headed out onto the Gorge trail. There was hardly anyone else out, so we were able to get some amazing pictures of the falls and scenery.
One of the things we wanted to test out was my homemade alcohol stove on the trail! We brought a portable lunch and cooked it right there on the trail, in the rain. It worked out perfectly!! I cooked cheddar broccoli rice with tuna.
Part 2:
We had to be off our campsite the last day by 11am, and we wanted to take advantage of being in that area so we found another hiking trail named Van Lone Hill Trail about 12 miles SE of Watkins Glen. It was a simple trailhead off the side of a back road. The weather had actually stopped raining and the sun was peaking through (temp was still about 47) so we packed up our day bags for the 5.6 mile hike in the forest! We didn't see another soul the whole way.
This ended up being one of my favorite trails hiked so far!! I highly recommend it. A great variety of conditions, moderately strenuous, and BEAUTIFUL scenery.
